Navigating the Liminal Currents of Life

Without giving you specific details, many of my family members and friends had a week that required us to navigate uncharted waters, such as losing a relationship with a loved one, beginning a new career, or feeling like our contributions to our society could differ. It’s always challenging for us to sit and wait for the subsequent phases of our journeys, especially if they involve needing more control over the process or the outcome.

Navigating the liminal space, which is in between phases of transition, can be both exhilarating and overwhelming. It’s a time of great uncertainty and endless potential, and it’s vital to approach it with mindfulness. Embracing mindfulness while seated in the liminal space allows us to stay connected to the present moment, grounded, and open to opportunities. Mindfulness empowers us to fully experience the current moment without feeling consumed by the weight of the past or the uncertainties of the future. It enables us to acknowledge our thoughts and emotions with kindness and understanding, which is particularly valuable during times of change. Through mindfulness, we can observe our feelings and thoughts as they arise, comprehend them, and choose how to respond with compassion and insight. During the liminal phase, it’s common to feel many emotions, ranging from hope and anticipation to apprehension and self-doubt. Mindfulness offers a way to gracefully navigate these emotions, providing a sense of calm and clarity. By cultivating mindfulness, we gain the capacity to make more intentional choices, preventing ourselves from getting carried away by the uncertainties of the transitional period, and thereby, taking control of our journey.

Additionally, mindfulness amplifies our ability to tune into our intuition and inner wisdom. It facilitates a deeper connection with our inner voice and allows us to align with our most genuine values and aspirations. This heightened self-awareness can guide decisions that resonate with our authentic selves, even amidst the ambiguities of the liminal space. Ultimately, mindfulness is a powerful means of building resilience and adaptability. It equips us to embrace the unknown, welcome change, and remain receptive to new possibilities. By integrating mindfulness into our experience of the liminal space, we are better equipped to navigate transitions with grace, awareness, and a sense of inner tranquility.

For all who are currently experiencing uncertainty, breathe. Pause and focus on what you CAN control: simple routines such as folding clothes, doing dishes or pulling weeds from a garden may be helpful. If you can, eat nutritious food, move your body and occupy yourself with an activity that fulfills you. As always, the importance of community remains. If you can, ask for help – having someone hold space for us in uncertain moments is vital. You are not alone in this. Someday, when things have moved to the given path, you can offer that support in return. More importantly, BREATHE. A moment at a time, a second at a time, resolutions will slowly emerge.

I see you, and you matter.
Have a good Saturday.
